Zoom presentation this Friday (17/3/23) evening !
Recently an opportunity arose that I was sure Camera Club members would be interested in and so I grabbed it.
I have long admired and been amazed by the photography of Douwe Dijkstra, AKA “Dex”. He is the Mono Master! His work is inspirational and we all need inspiration when it comes to Monos. On his website, www.monochromevisions.net you can see examples of his work and learn more about him.
Dex has offered to give us a Zoom presentation about his work and how he goes about producing these wonderful images. His presentations are very good.
The Zoom presentation will be on Friday 17th March at 7.30pm and last 60-90 minutes. MARK IT IN YOUR CALENDAR!
Here is the invitation to the Zoom presentation by Douwe Dijkstra (Dex) on Friday 17th March, 7.30pm.
Put the date in your calendar and flag this email so you can find it when you need it. ***

Field Trip on Saturday, 11th March to Grassy Head for a Macro-Fungi-shoot.
We meet at 8:30 at the Parking Area of the Grassy Head turn-off , then Car-pool from there as 4×4’s are needed to traverse the narrow track. It takes about 80 minutes to get from Port Macquarie to the Grassy Head turn-off near the entrance to Yarrahapinni Mountain Reserve. ( a Map and co-ordinates will be provided) It’s an EARLY start for us then coming from Port!.
What to bring: Tripod, Camera, Macro Lens, full battery and back-up, Remote Trigger release or Bluetooth device, something soft to kneel on. Also a landscape lens for when you have a chance to look up .
What to wear: NOT shorts, NOT sleeveless or short-sleeves, NOT sandals!!Please make sure you are covered and protected from leeches, insects and mozzies with Insect Spray in your backpack. Wear walking shoes, socks, old Jeans and a light long-sleeve shirt and a hat. You must bring your own water, snacks, sandwiches and whatever else you need to sustain you from 8:30-13h00 when the group will be returning to the parking area at Grassy Head and your parked car.
Ian Dodd is an amazing photographer and a very good Leader and a bloodhound when it comes to sniffing out Fungi. You’ll get remarkable photos of the most unusual variety of Fungi with him. The idea of car-pooling is to minimise walking with your gear. It’s a hop-on-hop-off excursion from patch to patch of fungi growth.
I will have full particulars tomorrow at the LUSC Light Painting Meeting for anyone wanting to join the Macro Field Trip on Saturday.
Take care, but above all, take good photos.

Indoor Light Painting Shoot on Tuesday at LUSC
We are going to try and replicate the included images. Whether we’ll succeed remains to be seen. There’s a bit of ambient light seeping through the curtains in the Anzac room, but, we’ll have fun regardless.
Alan Rouse from Kempsey will be the Leader and once you have your settings dialled in ( please bring a torch so you can see in the dark…) we’ll have loads of fun.
What to bring : Tripod , Camera, Wide Angle lens, full battery , SD card and remote control trigger for your camera ( if you have) . What to wear…Black/ dark clothes because you will get a chance to swing the light-swords and wheels.
What will this exercise teach you? : The technical know-how on settings for a light-painting shoot anywhere…indoors, beach, subway etc.
As usual : 1pm-2pm if you want Lunch in the Bistro. The Shoot starts 2-4pm.
See you all on Tuesday.

The Lighthouse sunrise-shoot with Ben Fewtrell
When: SATURDAY MORNING 4th March @ 5:30am
Where: The Lighthouse (Little Bay- the Beach just to the North of The Lighthouse.
Bring: Tripod, Camera with WIDE-ANGLE lens – 14-28/16-35 (that range) remote release shutter or Bluetooth device, full battery and SD-Card, small torch and plastic bag to put your camera bag on so it doesn’t sit in the sand. Also bring a longer lens if you want – the odd Brahminy or Sea Eagle might just show up.
Arrangements: We meet at 5:30am IN the lower carpark (the first entrance to the left as you get to The Lighthouse) and will make our way down the stairs of that carpark to LITTLE BAY as a group. If you are late, please look for us from the top of the stairs leading down to Little Bay and come join us.
Hold thumbs for a good (if not spectacular!) sunrise.

2nd Rookie get-together
We had a great turnout for our second ‘Rookies Morning’ on Tuesday. Welcome to Caroline Cheryl our newest “Member to Be”. I’ve never seen anyone move so quickly and jump so high onto a picnic table before when two territorial Goannas went for it very close to our feet.
It was terrific to have our new members Alan Rouse and Bruce Lawrence all the way from Kempsey join us also.
Thanks again to our experienced photographers/tutors for their patience, time and for sharing their knowledge.
As has become a custom after our Rookie Mornings we all enjoyed a scrumptious lunch together. This time we debriefed and rewarded ourselves with lunch at the Rainforest Cafe at Sea Acres.
Watch this space for our next Rookie Day next month. All welcome.
The official Goanna watchmen – Bruce and Col Steve helping Lindy and Cheryl with settings The Goannas caused some angst as they are big and ferocious-looking Barbara and Jeannie doing sea-and-landscape photography Well worth the effort in the sun to sit down in the shade and be served a yummy lunch at Sea Acres Restaurant.
Until next time we get together.

Use the LIKE-feature in Open Competitions
The LIKE button has not been used a lot by our members and I urge you to give it a try .
This feature is available for all images in OPEN competitions. Click on members and on the next page you’ll find still open competitions on the LH side in blue windows under the PUBLISHED heading ( at the moment you’ll find February 2023 and November 2022 there). Click on the February competition and the page will open up on the entries for the competition. Click on any image ( they are thumbnails only) you like or that catches your eye and it will open up for you to peruse. On the RH side you’ll see 6x windows in blue and to the LH of them ( middle of the page ) you’ll see a green LIKE button. When you click on this button a comment window opens where you can critique this image, tell the photographer why you like it or don’t (!) or just make a single comment like wow 🤩 or beautiful 😻 or nice 👍 and then SAVE COMMENT.
I’ll keep an eye on how responsive the members are in using this feature and maybe we can add up the likes for every image and somehow derive a member’s choice from the entries which might or might not be different from the Judge’s choice, come Digital night ?
If you have a minute to spare, see if you can negotiate the website to get to this feature, and use it if there’s an image you particularly like.
Take care, but above all, take good photos !
