April and May Winners of Col’s Challenge…

Bruce Lawrence is the Winner for April with the brief : Tree Knot

Bruce Lawrence has an eye for a KNOT !

The May winner with the brief : Monument , is Steve Finlay.

Interesting image with a very well known Monument sitting outside the Art Gallery in Christchurch. 1.7 tonne bronze bull atop a grand piano, which became a symbol of hope in an earthquake-ravaged city, will make Christchurch it’s new home.

Congratulations to the winners! The brief for June is ZIPPER.

Take care, but above all, take good photographs.

Astro Night at Sancrox Reserve

We had an informative and fun Astro night on Wednesday. David Reneke and his Crew brought 3x Telescopes to the meeting and we all had wonderful opportunities to peek at different areas in the sky. David Reneke is a very knowledgeable man.

Steve Phelps wrote the following :

In spite of challenging conditions on Tuesday night and a very short window just after sunset before the cloud came over I managed to get a few shots of parts of the Milky Way, this one shows Rigel, a blue supergiant star against the outer Milky Way. 10 seconds at 6400, F2.8 20mm.

Anyone can take shots like this from their back yard in Port Macquarie by the way, even in town with streetlights, on a dark sky night.

There is some cloud (the yellow-brown) in this crop but at least you can see what a relatively sparsely populated section of the Milky Way looks like. The crop was 2760 X 2760, about 1/3 of the frame on my D750.

No noise reduction or sharpening required. When we were leaving about 8pm would normally be about when the sky actually gets dark – astronomical darkness begins about an hour after sunset and ends about 1.5-2 hours before sunrise.

John Smith took this beautiful image of Rhys Emanuel pointing to a specific area in the sky with his Astro laser
We were 20+ plus people at the Astro night. Very well attended and the Telescopes were very popular.
Steve Finlay wrestling with infinity focus in the dark.
This particular image was taken by one of our new members, Kevin Weir at Boomerang Beach a while ago.
